Do dogs have to wear collars?

Yes. All dogs in the UK need to wear a dog collar according to the Control of Dogs Order 1992 which states “every dog shall wear a collar with the name and address of the owner inscribed on the collar or on a plate or badge attached to it”.

There are exceptions to this order for certain dogs including work dogs, service dogs, and guide dogs. This order is in place to return your dog safely to you if it gets lost, so it’s important to get a high-quality collar that your dog can be comfortable in for long periods of time.

How tight should a dog collar be?

How tight your dog’s collar needs to be will vary based on the breed and size of your dog, but a collar that’s too loose or too tight can cause you problems. There is a general rule of thumb you can use as a good starting point which is the two-finger rule.

When the collar is fastened around your dog’s neck, you should be able to fit two fingers between the collar and your dog’s neck. If it’s difficult to squeeze your fingers in, the collar is too tight. If your fingers do not stick between the neck and collar, it’s too loose. This rule should be adjusted to one finger for small dogs and three fingers for larger dogs.

If you’re unsure before purchasing, all our dog collars have a Size & Fitting tab where you can find the product-specific information on which size will fit your dog best based on neck size.

Can a dog wear a collar instead of a harness?

A good dog harness is often the safest and most comfortable way to walk your dog because they fasten more securely and cover more of your dog to disperse pressure. While a good dog harness can make walks easier by distributing the load, they’re best used alongside a collar.

Not displaying your dog’s identification is against the law and many dog harnesses don’t have a place to display tags.  Choose a high-quality dog collar with space for tags to use with your harness to make sure you’re covered.

How do you measure a dog’s neck for a collar?

To get a perfect fit for your dog's collar, it's important to measure the center of their neck accurately. Use a soft cloth tape measure or piece of string and place it at the widest part of their neck. Make sure the tape measure or string is snug, but not too tight. If you used string, use a rigid ruler to measure its length after. This will give you the size you need for your dog's collar.
